Cheltenham 2-45
Tana River

Cheltenham 3-20
Eleazar

Carlisle 3-25
Mill Side
Value 8 Bet 14

Haydock 3-30
Good Spirit
Value 9 Bet 22

Wincanton 2-50
Winsley Hill
Val 10 Bet 14

Ludlow 4-00
Kilrogan
Val 3 Bet 10

Sat 4th
Aintree 2-50
UNITED
Val 7 Bet 40 3/16 28/1
Tracked leaders, led 3 out, headed approaching last, stayed on same pace.
United did easily best of those who ran at Cheltenham, where she was second in the mares’ race, and she deserves a deal of credit. This seems to be her trip now, but connections would haver preferred a bit more give.

Aintree 3-25
PRETTY STAR
Val 12 Bet 16 5/17 16/1
Prominent, outpaced when mistake 14th, weakened 4 out.
Pretty Star, who ran a cracking race when second in the Kim Muir at Cheltenham, was racing from 2lb out of the handicap and may have been feeling the effects of a long season.

Fri 3rd
Aintree 4-55
SWEETHEART
Value 33/1 Bet 40/1 9/21 28/1
Held up, ridden approaching 3 out, never dangerous.

Thu 2nd
Aintree 2-00
HILLS OF ARAN
Value 7/1 Bet 18/1 6/10 16/1
Chased leaders, challenged 9th, ridden and weakened 3 out.
Hills Of Aran has had quitea few races recently, which may have counted against him in this company. He looked a little keen in the very early stages.

Aintree 4-20
LORD JAY JAY
Value 33 bet 50 2/17 40/1
Led to 3rd, remained handy, led approaching 3 out, ridden and headed before last, unable to quicken near finish.
Lord Jay Jay ran above himself after being ridden witha bit of restraint this time. He is a little high in the handicap when considering his winning form, but it would come as no surprise to see him pick up a nice handicap in the spring.

MARCH 2009

Sat 28
Lingfield 4-35
HOO LA BALOO
Value 9/2 Bet 8/1 4/12 9/1
Held up in midfield, headway after 9th, chased leader before 3 out until before 2 out, one pace after.
Hoo La Baloo has come down to a good mark after four modest efforts in good company. Well behind Miss Mitch last time, he moved smoothly off the pace but could not quicken when asked for maximum effort. He is being prepared for the Bet365 Gold Cup at Sandown, so connections will be delighted with this run.

Fri 27
Ascot 4-05
CHURCH ISLAND
Value 7/4 Bet 8/1 PU/12 7/1
Mistake 1st, chased leaders, 4th when blundered 11th, not recover, pulled up before 13th.
Church Islandlooked to have a leading chance but blundered at the first fence on the second circuit and was pulled up soon afterwards.

Thu 26
Towcester 3-55
MACMAR
Value 7/1 Bet 20/1 7/17 16/1
Chased leaders, jumped slowly 3rd, lost place 6th, behind and ridden 7th, lost touch 9th, plugged on past beaten horses from 2 out, tailed off.

Wed 25
Towcester 3-10
DARYAL
Value 8/1 Bet 14/1 6/9 20/1
Held up, not fluent 4th, behind from 5th.

Sat 21
Haydock 3-15
BRAVE REBELLION
V 5 Bet 8 R/8 8/1
In rear, pushed along and headway 8th, went modest 3rd 11th, ridden next, weakened and jumped right 2 out, distant 3rd when tried to run out and refused last.
Brave Rebellion looked a possible threat to the winner turning for home, but his jumping went to pot from three out and he eventually refused at the last. He now has it to prove.

Fri 20
Kelso 4-00
Tom’s Toybox
V 5 Bet 12 E WON/10 8/1
In touch, steady headway before 3 out, effort before last, stayed on well to lead near finish.
TOM’S TOYBOX still had a fair bit of groundto make up on the leaders approaching the final fence, but he stayed on up the run-in to snatch the race close home and complete a double for his yard. Unbeaten in two starts at Kelso now, he has eased back down the weights after winning twice last summer and he showed his appreciation of this faster ground.

Kelso 4-35
PANAMA AT ONCE
V 7/2 Bet 5B UR/7 5/1
Not fluent, behind, rallied 4 out, 6 lengths last and no impression when blundered and unseated rider next.
Panama At Once was a couple of pounds out of the weights but still only 3lb higher than when winning at Aye earlier in the month. He was in touch in sixth place, but under pressure, when firing his rider over his head at the third-last.

Thu 19
Ludlow 3-05
ARCHIMBOLO
V 6 Bet 8E Fell/11 17/2
Reluctant to race and started slowly, held up in rear, headway 6th, close 3rd when fell 8th.
Archimboldo had closed up and was in a good position when falling at the fourth-last, badly hampering Starr Flyer who unshipped his rider in the process.

Ludlow 3-35
HAAR
V 3 Bet 5E 2/7 6/1
Held up, hit 1st and 4th, headway approaching 5th, ridden and every chance approaching 4 out, not fluent 2 out, beaten when mistake last.
Haar, runner-up to a fair sort over CD last time, was unfortunate to bump into a well-weighted rival for this handicap debut. He stayed on best he could for second, despite hitting the last two fences, and has a small race in him.

Tue 17
Kempton 3-40
MENDO
V 6 Bet 12E 2/12 13/2
Waited with in chasing group, progress 7th, closed to challenge after 3 out, led before next, hanging right after 2 out, headed and outpaced before last.
Mendo came in for support with this better ground more in his favour and he gave his supporters real hope at the top of the home straight. He had no more to give after taking it up after two out and looks weighted to his best, but this was better from him.

Sat 14
Uttoxeter 2-35
MAKTU
V 7/2 Bet 12E 4/15 14/1
Held up in mid-division, badly hampered 6th, headway approaching 7th, ridden approaching 3 out, one pace from 2 out.
Maktu, 9lb higher, was back in trip yet it was his reluctance to settle that really cost him. He still performed creditably on this quicker surface and remains capable of a little better.

Uttoxeter 3-10
GIDAM GIDAM
V10 Bet 12E 6/18 6/1
Led 1st to 7th, led 7th to 10th, led 18th, headed after 4 out, weakened approaching 2 out.
There was decent support for Gidam Gidam and, positively ridden, he had his rivals hard at work when opening up a clear lead turning for home. He began to tread water soon after four out though and this could well have come a little too soon for him.

Fri 13
Cheltenham 2-05
GROUP CAPTAIN
V 14 Bet 50E 15/27 40/1
In touch, ridden 3 out, hit 2 out and soon weakened.

Thu 12
Cheltenham 4-00
OCEANOS DES OBREAUX
V 5 Bet 22E PU/23 20/1
Chased leader to 11th, tailed off when pulled up before 3 out.

Wed 11
Cheltenham 4-00
CHIEF YEOMAN
V 9 Bet 28E 16/27 25/1
Always in midfield, ridden and no progress well before 3 out, struggling after.

Tue 10
Cheltenham 2-40
LACDOUDAL
V 10 Bet 33E 6/21 25/1
Chased leaders, hit 10th, lost position 4 out, stayed on again from 2 out but never in contention.
Lacdoudal hit a flat spot before keeping on again, but returned to his best with a sound effort in defeat and is another who helps to set the level of this form.

Sat 7th
Sandown 2-35
STOLEN MOMENTS
V 5/2 Bet 14E 4/10 10/1
Chased winner, led 10th to next, led 12th to 14th, ridden 16th, outpaced approaching 3 out, kept on again run-in.
Stolen Moments is a hard ride, in so much that he needs stoking along at times, and merely kept plugging away after coming under pressure a long way out.

Sandown 4-55
SOLE AGENT
V 7/4 Bets 3, 4 6/6 4/1
Jumped slowly 1st, 3rd and 4th, weakened 7th, tailed off.
Sole Agent, who can be a front-runner, was under pressure a long way out and ran badly. His jumping was far from fluent.

Fri 6th
Sandown 2-45
THEDREAMSTILLALIVE
V 5 Bet 9E 3/7 15/2
Led, hit 7th, headed 10th, stayed pressing leaders to 3 out, stayed on same pace from 2 out and no impression on winner, lost 2nd close home.
Thedreamstillalive ran a creditable race from the front and put a below-par effort at Leicester behind him, but could not go with the winner from the third-last.

Sandown 3-55
GALA EVENING
VP 4 Bets 9/2E 5/1E 2/7(neck) 6/1
Held up in rear, jumped slowly 1st, headway approaching 2 out, stayed on strongly to go 3rd last, finished well, not quite get up.

Gala Evening was a pound badly in under the penalty he pickedup for his recent Newbury win and ran a big race. Held up in rear, he was being squeezed along leaving the back straight and had plenty of ground to make up at that point, but he began to improve from the second-last and stayed on really well up the hill, needing another couple of strides. He should continue to run well and could revert to the Flat now for the Queen’s Prize at Kempton.

Thu 5th
Lingfield 3-55
SERHAAPHIM
VP 5/2 Bet 7E 6/8 9/2
Not jump well, in touch to 7th, soon struggling under pressure, well behind before 2 out.

A couple of 2nds at double figure prices so very close to a decent monthly profit. Overall, not bad. Cut out a couple of bets and better luck in running should result in a positive score next month.

Sat 28
Newbury 2-35
CHURCH ISLAND
VP 3 Bet 6B 2/8 15/2
Hit 1st, rear and pushed along 8th to 9t, mistake 11th (water), hit 14th, left 2nd after 17th, ridden 4 out, hit 2 out, stayed on run-in but never any chance with winner

Church Island, raised 7lb for his recent victory in a veterans’ chase at Doncaster, was under pressure with over a circuit to run. He did not give in however, closing down the back, and he ran on well down the straight for a clear second.

Donc 3-25
GIDAM GIDAM
VP 4 Bet 14E 2/8 9/1
With leaders, chased winner 2 out, switched left approaching last, stayed on well run-in, edged left and no extra towards finish.

…third off the same mark over 4m here last time, saw his race out strongly, although he never really looked like getting by the winner. He had looked high enough in the weights, but this effort suggestsotherwise, and connections are now considering the Midlands Grand National, as long as the ground is not soft.
